torque wrench setting for rear wheel bearing nut

 

1997 1.8TD escort saloon

 

went to ford dealer, he said 260 Nm & showed me a printout

 

went to buy a 260 Nm torque wrench & got laughed at

 

motor factor guy would not believe figure was right

 

went to different ford dealer, got the same figure on a different printout

 

went back to motor factor, he said "i'll ask the bearing manufacturer"

 

apparrently he spoke to skf, and a couple of other bearing manufacturers, they apparrently all said the 260 Nm was way way too high a figure

 

motor factor guy said, you'll ruin the bearings in no time doing them that tight. Just do them up until there is no free play in the wheel, drive a bit, check them again. then, tighten a further quarter turn and that's it, job done.

 

am now confused

 

who to believe?

 

I am tempted to go with the official ford figure but that means me getting the calculator and the bathroom scales out, and standing on the spanner at a very precise distance from the nut lol.

 

being as i am fair tubby, I should only need a short spanner :rolleyes:

I removed my o/s rear hub last year and noticed the setting seemed high but went by the book (Haynes).I went by the lb/ft reading which is 192,my torque wrench only goes to 110 so went on the scrounge.The bloke down the local garage was talking to his mate who happened to be an ex Ford mechanic.I told him what i was doing and he lent me a wrench to do the job.The box it was in resembled a coffin.Both feet off the floor,sweating like a pig,teeth marks on the roof i finally got it to tighten to the setting.Interestingly that same bearing failed the MOT about 6 weeks later.

The bearing that's failed on me is one I did myself one year ago.. Thinking about it I dimly remember going through this same palaver back then - and ending up by going by the book. So, my 260 nm bearing has lasted twice as long as your 260 nm bearing davec :P

 

Can't help thinking, especially after the widespread disbelief I keep running into on mentioning the figure, and especially after the motor factor speaking to skf et al, and even more especially after davec's comment above... if it might not actually be a bad idea to drop the figure a bit? Everyone supposedly 'in the trade' / 'in the know' I've come across has expressed suprise.

 

That said, I'd never argue with the manufacturer's figure unless I could find some greater authority with a full explanation for a different figure so for now 260 it'll be even if it does cost me more new bearings in a short while, I guess :(

260 cant be right,just bang it on untill it wont go any further with an air gun, which is roughly about 160NM - 200NM if using a torque wrench. i dont have a torque wrench at home but i have had the drums off and just tightened it down with my breaker bar and guessed, not exactly techincal but as long as its tight and you knock that part of the nut with a chisel to stop it coming loose by itself you're fine

I bet no body nocks out the old inner bearing shell befor putting a new bearing in?

All ways done rear wheel bearings to 190 ft pounds.replaced rear bearings twice in 17 years on my rs2000.
